Turning a vacant infill site into a successful urban entertainment and residential district
Like all county seats in Indiana, Greencastle’s downtown is organized around a large civic square hosting the county courthouse. This quintessential small town is also home to DePauw University, who secured a grant from the Lilly Foundation to study campus and community connections. Working in collaboration with a developer, architect, and construction management professionals, MKSK examined how to integrate more housing, elevate multi-modal connectivity, shape public spaces for special events and everyday economic development, all within the lens of maintaining small town character and feel.
The plan was completed through an intensive four-month process which included regular touchpoints with local leadership, university leadership, and members of the community. This community input has served to play an important role in sharing local knowledge, experiences, and important role in sharing local knowledge, experiences, and expectations to be incorporated into the plan. Ultimately, this plan will shape the next chapter of downtown Greencastle; identifying development projects that can move directly into funding, design, and construction.
The University and the City will continue to pursue funding opportunities to assist in the construction of key projects identified by this master plan. The process of obtaining funding, design, and construction will occur over time with this Master Plan serving as a roadmap towards implementation and bringing this vision to life!
