Transforming a riverfront property into a modern sports complex
The Cleveland Cavaliers and Bedrock, in partnership with the Cleveland Clinic, have embarked on the design and construction of a one-of-a-kind sports performance center to be located along the Cuyahoga River in Cleveland, Ohio. The main purpose of Global Peak Performance Center is to serve as the new home for the Cleveland Cavaliers training programs and the Cleveland Clinic’s use as a state of-the-art medical facility. The significance of the building siting relates to its location along the riverfront, and as an iconic anchor that will seamlessly tie into the Cuyahoga Riverfront Master Plan and Vision for the Valley.
The Cuyahoga Riverfront Master Plan identifies the riverfront land as an asset that can connect communities, create vibrant public spaces, and overall, improve the environment. The Cleveland Clinic Global Peak Performance Center and surrounding public realm will embrace these principles and serve as a catalyst to foster connectivity and growth.
MKSK is Master Planner and Landscape Architect for all public realm improvements for this initial sequence of development. The first phase of development includes the first segment of the 3,000-ft. Riverwalk, a dedicated pedestrian promenade featuring lush, native plantings, seating for rest and relaxation, custom planters, and significant open frontange to the river that will directly connect users with the shoreline of the Cuyahoga River. At the gateway to this fantastic new public open space is a gentle sloping and generously sized kayak launch that provides users with an open view of the riverfront skyline. Also included within this phase are propose streetscape improvements, dedicated cycle tracks, new canopy trees, and a variety of overlook points from which to take in the expansive views up and down river.
