Reimagining a core street in Downtown Columbus into a signature pedestrian-forward experience
By reimagining Gay Street to expand the focus on the pedestrian experience and placemaking, Downtown Columbus, Inc., and the City of Columbus are taking an ambitious step towards implementing the first phase of a downtown, connected bicycle and pedestrian-friendly loop. This project will link Gay Street to key destinations downtown, accommodating increased economic development, multimodal connectivity, and access to artistic and cultural experiences.
MKSK is coordinating the site designs and public right-of-way improvements, including:
A people-centric design focus to include street trees, street lighting, landscaping, street furniture
Connectivity and linkages from the Riverfront through the Discovery District
Inclusiveness/accessibility
Street design to prioritize shared road spaces suited to slow-moving and low volume vehicle traffic
Pedestrian plazas
A dedicated and inaugural section of a pedestrian and bicycle pathway to be part of a loop system around key assets Downtown
A suggested public art location map, with associated utilities
