Dedicated urban planner and place-keeper seeking to revitalize and sustain community identity and vitality over time.

Nick Kalogeresis is an Associate Principal at MKSK with more than 35 years of experience in community planning projects in the Midwest and across the country, focused on enhancing places that embrace both the old and the new and on the transformational power these environments have to improve a community’s social, economic, and cultural vitality and well-being.  Nick has worked on a diverse range of assignments throughout his career, preparing plans for traditional downtowns, commercial corridors, neighborhoods, subareas, and mixed-use development sites.  He has also led several award-winning comprehensive planning efforts in Illinois.

Nick’s planning practice includes historic preservation, arts and culture, design guidelines, and urban design management, with projects in small rural communities and counties to urban neighborhoods and major cities, from New York state to Montana and Hawaii.  Through this work, he examines how historic preservation can help address today’s pressing planning challenges, including attainable housing, vibrant neighborhoods and downtowns, and the long-term sustainability and resilience of communities.  His design guidelines practice focuses on carefully integrating historic settings with new development to create compelling, inspiring places.  Nick’s planning approach is grounded in energetic community engagement and thoughtful storytelling that helps communicate planning opportunities and possibilities.

In addition to his planning practice, Nick actively teaches and lectures on historic preservation planning and writes his own blog, the Places of Sense Chronicles.
