New construction, renovation projects bring enhanced K-12 learning environments for an entire community.

Following the levy passage, MKSK collaborated as subconsultant with the Moody Nolan/Perkins + Will team, Upper Arlington School District, and members of the public to design site infrastructure systems for six new construction, redesign, and renovation projects. Projects include Upper Arlington High School, Barrington Elementary, Greensview Elementary, Tremont Elementary, Wickliffe Progressive School, and Windermere Elementary

MKSK was part of the Architect led planning team that developed a comprehensive master plan for the Upper Arlington School District. The process included a detailed evaluation of the existing facilities, a robust public process and concluded with broad recommendations for replacement facilities. The results of the master plan were instrumental in the District’s successful levy campaign in 2017.

A creative approach to stormwater management on several of the sites is being explored through the use of integrated surface and subsurface storage systems, permeable pavements, rain gardens, bio-retention areas, increased green space, and native plantings. The site improvements are carefully designed to provide enhanced learning environments within the budget requirements of the School District. 

Site design considerations include sensitive integration of site circulation into existing neighborhoods, preservation of existing trees, new entry plazas and pedestrian circulation, improved play areas and open space, and outdoor classroom environments. The design of the High School athletic complexes also balances sports performance with enhanced circulation and spectator experiences.

Security measures were also prioritized by the client group as detailed through a third-party assessment, and MKSK took direction to ensure the site design conformed to security recommendations. The projects also included an intensive agency approval process within the City of Upper Arlington and complex construction phasing requirements to ensure continual operations.
