A community center focused on athletics and social equity grows out of Louisville’s westside
MKSK collaborated closely with the Louisville Urban League and Louisville Metro to plan, design, and deliver a valuable community resource for West Louisville that serves as a hub for community engagement, recreation, and education. MKSK developed the 24-acre campus master plan early in the process. This was followed with implementation that included the 90,000 square foot Norton Healthcare Sports & Learning Center, as well as a 400-M outdoor track and field, a 3-acre community green and front patio space, and over 770 parking spaces spread between two parking lots.
The Community Green with its North/South pedestrian promenade not only creates access from the parking lots to the front doors located at the center of the site, but also provides a great opportunity for programming and activation through food truck events, larger outdoor festivals, as well as the flexibility to host numerous different outdoor local community events as well as regional and local track and field events.
On what was once an uninhabitable brownfield, now sits a facility that fills a void in the local, regional, national, and international track and field community. The Norton Healthcare Sports & Learning Center is spurring economic and community growth for black businesses and families, igniting a culture of change that passes asset and wealth building down to future generations.
