One Howard Street is an economic recovery plan for a corridor with a storied history and a promising future

The Study Area for the Howard Street Economic Recovery Plan includes a 1.25-mile corridor along the municipal border between Chicago and Evanston. Despite having been the subject of many plans and initiatives over recent decades, Howard Street’s local economy has struggled to reach its potential.

The plan takes an inclusive and equitable planning approach by proposing a path for healing, taking a systems approach that centers quality of life for those who are already on Howard Street, and welcomes future residents, businesses, and visitors to a welcome and activated corridor.

Beyond individuals and organizations collaborating, One Howard Street offers strategies to align city policies and programs on both sides of the street to streamline the processes of establishing a small business, permitting a new development, or enabling local activation and beautification efforts.

MKSK developed key urban design and activation strategies to support the principles of the Economic Recovery Plan.
