Pop Up Performance Park acts as an economic catalyst for an emerging music and arts district

In a collaborative effort, Renaissance Covington, The Catalytic Fund, and design partners MKSK and BLDG were selected as the Grand Prize Winners of the ‘Place from Space’ Competition, an Architectural Foundation of Cincinnati sponsored design initiative to turn vacant urban spaces into vibrant community spaces throughout the Cincinnati area.

The Pop Up Performance Park repurposed an underutilized parking lot at the corner of 7th Street and Washington Avenue in Covington, Kentucky, into an iconic gathering space for the surrounding neighborhood. The multi-purpose use of the space could be easily converted from parking lot use into a public event space for outdoor events, concerts, street art and food trucks, gallery openings, and existing programming by Covington Arts.

The launch of the the Pop Up Performance Park took place in August 2014. Implementation was a coordinated effort of partner organizations and stakeholders, local volunteers, and the City of Covington. The design of the Pop Up Performance space was mostly built out of recycled and reclaimed materials.

In the midst of two emerging districts, Covington Arts & Technology District and MADLAND Music and Arts District, and adjacent to Covington’s historic central Business District, the Pop Up Performance Park has acted as an economic catalyst and spurred new development for Covington’s emerging urban core.
