ContactDesigning durable public realms for everyday life.
Jeffrey J. Pongonis is a Principal and Practive Leader whose 28-year career has been shaped by a belief that landscape architecture is not simply a matter of form, but a civic framework for resilient urban life. Working at the intersection of urbanism, landscape architecture, and the public realm, he approaches design as a systems-based practice that brings together social enrichment, economic performance, and ecological health. Rather than treating parks, streets, campuses, and civic spaces as isolated objects, he views them as connected infrastructure capable of improving how cities function, evolve, and endure.
Jeffrey is often engaged at moments of urban transition, when underperforming districts, fragmented public environments, or post-industrial sites require more than aesthetic improvement. His work focuses on translating complexity into durable landscape frameworks that can support everyday life, attract investment, strengthen identity, and improve long-term environmental performance. Across downtowns, development districts, ecological corridors, and institutional settings, he brings equal attention to spatial quality, implementation strategy, and the civic life a place can sustain over time.
One of the clearest expressions of that approach is found in Columbus, Ohio, where over a 22-year period he has helped shape a several-hundred-acre network linking the Arena District, Grandview Yard, Astor Park, and the Scioto Greenways. Developed in collaboration with clients and community partners, that work has included courtyards, plazas, streetscapes, green corridors, and signature open spaces supported by a managed urban forest of more than 5,000 trees. In this context, the landscape is not treated as an amenity alone, but as a performative ecological system and a long-term public health asset—an evolving model for how contemporary cities can be meaningfully greened.
As a design leader, Jeffrey has contributed to major planning efforts that use landscape as a primary driver of urban transformation, including the 2010 Downtown Columbus Strategic Plan, the 2013 Downtown Louisville Master Plan, the Tulsa Arena District Master Plan, and the 2021 Rapid 5 One Central Greenway framework. Across these efforts, his work reflects a consistent conviction: that the public realm is a catalytic civic asset capable of organizing growth, reconnecting neighborhoods, and creating more inclusive, memorable, and ecologically adaptive urban environments.
Beyond practice, Jeffrey’s leadership also extends into civic and professional service. He has served on the North Market Board of Trustees and currently serves on the Downtown Commission, in Columbus, Ohio. Those roles reinforce the broader throughline of his career: a commitment not only to designing places, but to strengthening the institutions, partnerships, and public processes that help those places thrive over the long term.
